GIS & Social Science

GIS & Social Science

Welcome to my GIS & Social Science Blog.  This blog was created as a course project for Geography 465/565: Geographical Information Systems & Science, at Oregon State University.  Within the accompanying pages I’ve explored the academic literature to find examples of research highlighting applications of GIS technology or discussions of GIScience in various social science contexts.  The references are reviewed in the style of an annotated bibliography broken into two categories: 1) books or articles containing applications of GIS in social science research, and 2) general reference books or articles.  Each annotation includes a general summary of the reference and why it is useful to inform my research interests.

My research interests include exploring the use of GIS to visually and contextually depict social space in collaborative natural resource management scenarios.  It was my hope that through this literature review, I would identify innovative examples to inform this process.  My dissertation research will focus on water resource management in the Klamath River Basin of south-central Oregon and northern California, USA.

If you are interested in the possibilities of using GIS in social science research, please use the resources I have provided here. If you have any questions or would like to add to this site, please contact me via email: Brian Chaffin
